JOHN RAYMOND "Ray" KUMMA January 9, 1925 - July 27, 2014 John Raymond "Ray" Kumma, age 89 of Menahga, MN formerly of Seattle, WA, peacefully entered eternal life on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home, following a period of declining health. Ray was born on January 9, 1925 to Matt and Eva (Wickman) Kumma on the home farm near Menahga. His mother died when Ray was at the tender age of 7 years. He spent the rest of his boyhood years living with various relatives. Ray entered the United States Army in November of 1945. He proudly served his country as a medium tank crewman until his honorable discharge in 1947. Ray returned to Menahga where he worked on his brother, Elmer's farm for a time. Later, he and brother, Eino ventured to Seattle where they gained employment laying hardwood floors. Times were difficult in those days and they would carry their tools consisting of a hatchet, a hammer and a handsaw in a pail on the bus ride to work each day. Marjorie Stimpson traveled to Seattle after she graduated from high school in Menahga and the young couple were married on September 3, 1949. They were blessed with three children" John, Arlyce and Gary. Ray loved the out doors and especially enjoyed times spent fishing with his family and friends. He was an avid sports fan who enthusiastically followed his favorite football and hockey teams. Ray was a man of faith and loved to worship and fellowship with his church family at the Spruce Grove Apostolic Lutheran Church near Wolf Lake. Above all, Ray devoted his life to his precious wife, Marjorie, his children and his grandchildren. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife for these past 64 years, Marjorie of Menahga; his sons: John (Larisa) Kumma and Gary Kumma all of Seattle; daughter, Arlyce (Phil) Frost of Seattle; a grandson, John and granddaughter, Carla (David) Quilliams; nine dearly loved great grandchildren and l great great grandchild; his sister, Elsie (MuMu) Aho as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Monday, August 4, 2014 at the Spruce Grove Apostolic Lutheran Church near Wolf Lake with the Reverend Dennis Hannu and Rev. Elmer Yliniemi officiating. The music will be: The active casket bearers will be: Elias Aho, Harvey Aho, Joshua Aho, Harry Aho, Kenny Bloomer and Donald Stimpson. Interment will be made in the Kumma family plot located at the Hillview Cemetery. The Guy L McDermeit VFW Post # 6206 of Menahga will provide the military honors. A luncheon will be hosted by the church for all following the funeral service. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 PM on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at the Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home in Menahga and also for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
