ROY ALLEN BREITWESER May 8, 1918 - August 9, 2014 Roy Allen Breitweser, age 96, a long time Walker, MN area resident, formerly of Park Rapids, peacefully entered eternity on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at the May Creek Lodge Assisted Living Center in Walker. Roy was born on May 8, 1918 to Fred and Ida (Johnson) Breitweser on his parent's farm near Itasca State Park. As a boy he attended country school near his home. As a teenager he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps helping to build and develop the present day Itasca State Park and also helped on the family farm. He went on to attend high school in Park Rapids from where he graduated with the Class of 1941. In 1942 he entered the United States Army where he proudly served his country in the African and European theatres of WWII until receiving his honorable discharge in 1945. Roy married his high school sweetheart, Alice Mae Bopp on October 2, 1942. This union was blessed with seven children: Harold, James, Richard, Betty, Donald, Mary and Gary. After the war, Roy returned home to Park Rapids and began working as a linotype operator in a career that spanned over 30 years. He first began working for the print shop in Park Rapids. He later transferred to the Walker Pilot Newspaper where he worked from 1952-1976. In 1976, he began working for the Ah-Gwah-Ching Nursing Home until his retirement in 1983. During retirement he and Alice enjoyed traveling thoughout the United States. Roy enjoyed the outdoors; especially when he could be fishing with his family. His life was deeply saddened by the death of his wife, Alice in April of 1989. His life was made complete again by his marriage to LuVerne Crandall in 1990. They enjoyed eight happy years together until her death in 1998. Following her death, Roy moved to Park Rapids where he made his home until moving to the May Creek Lodge in Walker in 2009. Roy will be lovingly remembered by his five children: Harold (Elvie) Breitweser of Anoka; James (Denise) Breitweser of Oahu, HI, Betty (Larry) Carroll of Live Oak, FL, Mary (Randy) Fisher of Walker and Gary Breitweser of Live Oak, FL; nine dearly loved grandchildren and 11 precious great grandchildren; two sisters: Ruby Hensel and Pearl Bopp both of Park Rapids, MN as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two sons: Richard and Donald who died in early childhood; his two wives and his brother, Clyde. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids with the Reverend Edward Behling officiating. The casket bearers will be Roy's children and grandchildren. The honorary casket bearers will be nieces and nephews. Interment will be made in the Greenwood Cemetery of Park Rapids next to his first wife, Alice. Military honors will be conducted by the Star Of The North Marine Corps League. Visitation will be held from 5 PM to 7 PM Monday, August 18 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids and again on Tuesday beginning one hour prior to the service.
